Sherwood Forest Country Park, located near Edwinstowe in the north of Nottinghamshire, just off the A614.
Sherwood Forest once covered a large part of the center of England, but today it's split into many much smaller chunks scattered around Nottinghamshire.
Near the small village of Edwinstowe in North Nottinghamshire is the Sherwood Forest Country Park. This 4.5 squre kilometer forest park has a visitor center, cafe and is home to the Major Oak.
The Major Oak is a huge 800 year old oak tree, weighing approx 23 tonnes, with a trunk circumference of 33 feet. According to legend, its hollow trunk was used as a hideout by Robin Hood’s men, this is doubtfull as the tree isn't really old enough to have been more than a sapling at the time of Robin Hood and his merry men.
The age of the tree is only a guess so maybe....
Access throughout the park is excellent with wide flat paths to all areas. It's a 15 minute walk from the car park, cafe to the Major Oak, where there are more seat and tables.
The area around the major oak is fenced off to protect the tree, but the rest of the forest is fully accessable and there are plenty of other huge old oak trees to see close up.
This forest has a different feel to many others in the area, probably because of it's age and the fact that it's mainly an Oak & Birch tree forest. The whole area feels more open - especially on a sunny day - the large oaks create space, unlike the newer dark coniferous forests.
Two other country parks contain parts of the old sherwood forest - Clumber Park and Rufford Country Park. Clumber is huge and owned by the National Trust.
