A lovely old market town to the North East of Nottingham. The Castle Ruins and Riverside Park are very nice places to visit (free).
The Castle is on the banks of the River Trent overlooking the main bridge over the river, it's also very near to Newark's working locks, with easy access to all parts of the lock. There are plenty of paths with seating along the river banks in both directions from the lock.
If you continue walking past the lock (away from the Castle) you'll come to a weir with nice stone footbridge over it. (photos below).
The train station is within easy walking distance of the Castle and town Centre (200yrds from the castle). The town itself has plenty of old shops and interesting buildings.
The center of the town is the old cobbled Market Place, a large open square surrounded by beautiful old buildings, which still houses the outdoor markets every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, as well as more specialized smaller markets on Monday and Thursday.
