North Derbyshire near Grindleford. Large expanse of moorland, woods and streams all within the Peak District National Park with loads of footpaths and mountain views.
Owned by the National Trust since 1931.The Longshaw area also has many exposed rock formations (great for dramatic photographs). There's also Curbar Edge - An extension of the Gritstone scarp extending from Froggatt Edge - very dramatic when the skies are right or the sun is setting. Within the Longshaw Estate, Burbage Brook starts in open moorland and winds it's way down to Grindleford through the woodland in Padley Gorge. For views of the open (non woodland) part of the Brook it's best to park on the roadside (B6521). The main NT car park is quite away from the brook. Warning - VERY Popular at weekends. |
For the woodland part of the brooks journey it's best to try to park near Grindleford train station and cafe at the bottom of the valley.
There are plenty of footpaths through the woodland along the brooks edge. I wouldn't bother trying to park anywhere near the station in the summer or at weekends - it gets very, very busy and it's not worth the stress.
The footpaths in the Longshaw Estate are well marked and easy to follow, but they are quite tough going, especially through the woodland section of the streams course. The best bet is to park at the top end of the gorge on the road side (B6521) and spend a few hours. Then drive down to Grindleford station to look at the woodland part of the streams journey. The Longshaw Estate is only a 15 minute drive from the Reservoirs of the Derwent Valley. |
