Staithes is a small fishing village with large bay harbour on the North Yorkshire Coast. The word 'Staithes' literally means "landing place".
As with most fishing villages on the North Yorkshire coast, cars aren't allowed down into the bay area.
The car park is at the top of the cliffs with a half mile (ish) footpath with steps or steep road leading down to the main part of Staithes harbour & fishing village.
It's definitely worth the effort to walk to Staithes. The village is built along the sides of Roxby Beck which splits the village in two, there's a foot bridge joining the two halves - accessed via a small alleyway off the main street. Along the seafront there's a pub and cafe (try the cobble cake!) and over the foot bridge there's the lifeboat station and gift shop.

Beyond the harbour, the beach is large and rocky - flat slabs of rock forming rock pools at low tide. Walking to the end of the harbour wall at high tide can prove refreshing! Within the harbour is nice small safe sandy beach.
All in all Staithes is a lovely unspoiled village, hopefully the difficulty of access will keep it that way.
