Robin Hood's Bay is the name of the village and the name of the beautiful cliff lined bay. This has got to be one of the most picturesque places in England.
There's plenty of car parking in the cliff top part of the village, with wonderful views across the bay (see pic above right).
Cars are not allowed into the main part of the village at the bottom of the cliffs (once you've walked down the hill you'll see why!)
The easiest way down to Robin Hood's Bay village is through a little gate near the car park and down a zigzag path to the sea wall / sea defenses. The 80ft sea wall is very impressive, built in the 1970's to protect the village & cliffs.
When I visited in September 2006 the tides were very high and even on a calm summers day the waves were spraying over the wall - great fun.
The village itself is small and very tightly packed together, with narrow streets and alleyways. At the bottom of the road there's a boat slipway, this is the main access to the beach - blocked off by high tide.
If you don't mind a steep walk with a few steps, then Robin Hood's Bay is a great place to spend a day.
Tip - the fish and chips from the village are great. The best place to eat them is the 'Quarter Deck' (just follow the footpath sign up the steps), a nice wide lower sea wall area overlooking the rocks.
