Places to Visit in The Lake District - Lake Coniston
 A loverly long narrow lake in the South West of the Lake District - many peoples favorite lake in Cumbria.The North end of the lake is near the town of Coniston and has good access to the lake, with a car park, toilets and long flat beach type edge to the lake. A fairly flat cycle path runs between the lake and the town. There's no easy access to the southern end of the lake, but the main road does have a pull in space with a good view over a small stone wall. There's a B road along the east side of the lake, with lots of car parks and picnic areas in Dodgson and Rigg woods. All with easy access to the lake side and woodland walks. |
The East side of the lake is much quieter especially in the summer when the town of Coniston (on the West side) can get very busy. The town of Coniston is very nice and not too commercial or 'touristy'. There's plenty of shops, pubs, cafes etc and a tourist info center. The water is often calm which allows good 'tranquil' reflective photographs to be taken. Not great for sunsets as the lake runs North to South and as usual in Cumbria the mountains block out the sun before it actually sets. There are a couple of photogenic jetties on the east side of the lake - just follow the path south from the main car park at the north end of the lake. |

Wast WaterProbably the most rugged lake in Cumbria and the deepest. It's also one of the hardest to get to, access is via long very bendy B road. Wastwater is located on the western edge of the lakes.Click here for Photographs and info on Wastwater |
Derwent WaterA wider lake in northern central lakes with the large town of Keswick near it's northern end. Easy access from A66. Best photo spots are probably along the eastern side along the B5289More wallpapers & info about Derwent Water |
UllswaterA loverly long narrow lake in the North East of the Lake District. (i think it's the longest lake in England??)The main road runs all the way along the west side of the lake and has plenty of pull in parking places with easy access to the lake. The Lake District is great for clear water streams with fast flowing water over rocks and pebbles. Don't just look at the big views (as impressive as they are), little babbling brooks can be just as interesting.
There's also lots of waterfalls in Cumbria. Moss Force nr Buttermere is an interesting one, with nice open views and less visitors than some of the more famous falls and forces. As with all falls, it's at it's best in Spring and Winter or after a heavy period of Summer rain. (not unknown in the Lake District). |
