| Probably one of the most photogenic roads in Cumbria. The road rises very steeply and gives great views at the high points of the pass. Hardknott Pass, one of the two steepest passes in the Lake District, is the name of an old Roman road build 110 AD to link the coastal fort at Ravenglass with their garrisons at Ambleside and Kendal. |
The Hardknott Pass vies with Rosedale Chimney in North Yorkshire for the title of steepest road in England with both having a gradient of 1 in 3 (about 33%) in places. Hardknott has the added difficulty of numerous Z bends - very hard for larger cars to navigate. As the road starts to descend there are fantastic views down to Eskdale and you can just about see the coast. Best visited in Spring or Autumn, not mid summer or school holidays - it's bad enough reversing back to passing places on a quiet day, but when 4 cars going each way meet it's a nightmare, that said, it's worth all the effort. |
